Networking is the process of making informal connections with a broad sphere of mutually beneficial business contacts. According to one recent survey, networking is the most common way that employees find jobs. Networking takes place wherever and whenever people talk: at industry functions, as social gatherings, at sports events and recreational activities, in online newsgroups, at alumni reunions, and so on.

Increasingly, business oriented social networking sites such as LinkedIn and Ryze have become important ways to get connected with job openings.

Networking involves the sharing of information between people who might be able to offer mutual help at some point in the future. To become a valued network member, you need to be able to help others in some way. The more you network, the more valuable you become in your network-and the more valuable your network becomes to you.
